August K. Schlensker, 90, of Scotia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 27th,2010, at Ellis Hospital with his family by his side. Born the youngest of nine children in Hille,Germany, son of the late Friederich and Auguste (Neitzke) Schlensker, he emigrated to theUnited States in 1952. He became a U.S. citizen and was certified as a plumber in 1957.He became a master plumber in 1963, starting his own plumbing business which hecontinued to operate until his retirement in 1989. August was the loving husband ofLisa Bokemeier, also of Hille, Germany, whom he married on September 26th, 1959.

 

He is survived by his wife and his children, Diana Rivenburgh of Schenectady,Frederick (Rosemary) Schlensker of Clifton Park, and Eric (Cheryl) Schlensker ofColumbia, SC. He was especially proud of his grandchildren, Austin and Erin Schlenskerof Clifton Park, and Christian Schlensker of Columbia, SC. He is also survived by his stepgrandchild, Michael Sherman of Columbia, SC, and many loving nieces and nephews, bothin Germany and the United States. August was a member of the American Turners since 1953and was very active in the Schenectady Turn Verein and the Maennerchor. He was thepresident of both of the organizations for many years and sang with the Maennerchor withenthusiasm. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and skiing in the Adirondacks in his younger years,as well as spending time with his family and friends, talking, laughing, and playing cards. Hisfun loving spirit was a joy to the people around him. The family would like to extend theirthanks and appreciation to the entire staff of the neurological ICU (C6) at Ellis Hospital fortheir sincere compassion and wonderful care shown to August during his final days there.
