Victor H. Smith died on Friday evening, January 29, 2010 in the home where he lived for 49 years with his devoted son Steve and daughter-in-law Cathy by his side.
Vic was born on May 24, 1919 in Greenpoint, NY, the third of six children and the oldest son of the late Herbert and Lillian Smith. He married Loretta Malkemus on February 14, 1942, who passed away on October 6, 2003. His brothers and sisters and their spouses also predeceased him. Vic and his family moved to California when he was ten and they returned to New York where they resided in Kingston. He graduated from Kingston High School in 1937. Vic was inducted into the United States Army Air Corps in June 1942. He served in the Pacific Theater as an Airplane Engine Mechanic, received the Good Conduct and Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medals, and was honorably discharged in 1945. Vic received a B.S. degree in Engineering from the University of Southern California in 1954. He began working for General Electric, first in Rome, Georgia and then was transferred to Schenectady in 1960. He retired from G.E. in 1979. He then embarked on a second career as an engineering inspector and expediter. He finally retired in 1993. Vic was an avid bridge player and enjoyed many happy hours playing with his
friends at the Scotia-Glenville Senior Center. He also enjoyed bowling, dancing, shoveling snow and telling his children how to drive. Vic sang in the choir of Men
and Boys at St. John's Episcopal Church in Kingston as a boy soprano and had a great tenor voice as an adult.
Vic was a longtime parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church in Glenville where he was received into the Catholic Church in 1986. Since 2007, Vic found a new parish home at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Albany where the congregation welcomed and genuinely cared for him. Vic accompanied Steve and Cathy to the rehearsals of the Cathedral and Festival Celebration Choirs where he found many new friends.
He is survived by three children, Andee Fountain (Bernie Fountain) of Poughkeepsie, Steve Smith (Cathy Bern-Smith) of Glenville, and Sherri Smith (Ron Pergola) of Short Hills, N.J.; four grandsons, Tim Fountain (Darlene), Brad
Fountain (Christine), Pieter Fountain (Anne), Brian Fountain (Jeannine), two granddaughters, Jenna Ronbeck and Jordan Ronbeck; eight great-grandchildren, Maggie and Ryan Fountain, Sarah and Emma Fountain, Lauren, Hunter and Travis Fountain, Katie Fountain; two step great granddaughters, Alexa and Tyler Servedio; his sisters-in-law Shirley Smith and Catherine Crooks, brother-in-law
Dennis Crooks; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend our gratitude to Vic's many health care providers including Dr. Hunter, Dr. Kennedy, Dr. Nolan, and Dr. Staunton, Visiting Nurses, and the doctors, nurses and technicians at Ellis Hospital in the ER, ICU, C1, Ellis Health Center, A5 and A6. Gingras for their pastoral care of Vic. We would also like to offer our thanks to the staff at O'Leary's, Oliver's Café and the Glenville Queen Diner for the gracious hospitality and care they showed Vic. Vic was also fortunate to have had the
same barber, Laslo, for over forty years.
Friends and family are invited to the viewing at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road, Glenville on Friday February 5, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. The funeral will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 400 Saratoga Road, Glenville. The Reverend William H. Pape, Rector of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception will officiate. The burial will follow immediately after the funeral at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, 2501 Troy-Schenectady Road,Niskayuna, NY.
