Richard W. Fyvie, 65, died suddenly at home Sunday March 5, 2006 from injuries sustained in a fire. Dick Fyvie will be remembered for his civic contributions, compassion and dedication to the Scotia community in which he lived.
Born on July 20, 1940 in Schenectady, the son of Thomas and Eloise Hart Fyvie, he was a standout athlete at Scotia-Glenville High School. From his high school he went into the Marine Corps serving from '58-'62. A lifelong area resident, he enjoyed 32 years with the Scotia Police Department where he served as Sergeant and Lead Investigator. His activity with area youth was boundless. He served as coach with Little League, Babe Ruth, and umpired organized Softball for many years as a member of the United Umpires Association. Dick was an avid bowler, golfer and torrid Red Sox Fan. His memberships included Veteran of Foreign Wars, Rotterdam Elks, PBA and Marine Corp League. Dick was proud of his co-founding OPERATION HANDSHAKE which brought area youths and police together. Dick was currently employed at Schenectady County Job Training Agency as a security officer for the past eight years.
He was predeceased by his wife Nancy Syrett (2001) and siblings Tom Fyvie, Bob Fyvie and Barbara Felano.
Survivors include his children, sons, Shawn R. Fyvie (Kim) of Gainesville, VA, and Mark Stanish Jr. of Albany; daughters, Laurie A. Fyvie and Sonja M. Dickerman (Leo), of Glenville, Kim L. Parisi (Vincent) of Scotia and Tracey A. Karl (John) of Nashville, TN; eleven grandchildren: Patrick, Michael and Ryan Fyvie; Amy, Zack and Lizzie Dickerman; Joshua Lyman, Elijah and Lucas Parisi and Nathan and Ethan Gori. Dick is survived by his sisters Marie Woodward of Charlton and Doris Barkley of Schenectady,several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 10 at 11am at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Rd. East Glenville with Rev. Jay Richmond officiating. Calling hours to which relatives and friends are invited will be held at the funeral home Thursday (March 9) from 4-8pm and Friday (March 10) from 10-11am. It is advised those able to call on the family during 3-5pm do so at the funeral parlor.
Interment with honors will follow at St. Anthony's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in memory of Dick Fyvie to the Scotia Police Benevolent Association/ N. Ten Broeck St. Village of Scotia 12302
